Tips for trading during the World CupMuch as we would all like to take a break during the World Cup month to watch every game or attend each match, at least at a Fan Park, it will have to be business unusual for all – and busier than Christmas for many. Unfortunately, it will be a teeth-gritting and frustrating time to do business, especially for those close to stadiums or on routes to stadiums. “Businesses in areas that will be affected need to ensure they have a schedule of events and they will need to understand what impact, if any, these will have on their business,” advises Peter McLaren-Kennedy (see picture), sales and marketing director at Metrofile. R88m in World Cup counterfeitsSince November 2009, fake and illegal 2010 FIFA World Cup merchandise worth more than more than R88m have been confiscated by the South African Revenue Services (SARS) at harbours and airports across SA - with the figure increasing on a weekly basis. “Using any FIFA Intellectual Property without a licensing agreement in place is against the law and officials will confiscate illegal goods wherever they find them; counterfeiting is a serious criminal offence,” says GBG general manager Paul Zacks. “We rely heavily on the general public’s assistance to report illegal importers, manufactures and distributors so any such acts of counterfeiting can be punished under respective local law.” All Official Licensed products bear the FIFA logo. Goalies complain about WC ballIt has become “fashion” for goalkeepers to complain about the erratic behavior of the official ball supplied by adidas before the FIFA World Cup (perhaps as an insurance policy?), and this year is no exception. This year Spain’s goalkeeper Iker Casillas complained that the Jabulani ball was better suited to the beach than to the finals in South Africa. "Now it isn't only the goalkeepers (complaining) it is the outfield players as well,” he is quoted by www.iol.co.za. The website further quotes Brazil goalkeeper Julio Cesar as saying the ball is "terrible, horrible" and like one purchased in a supermarket, while Italy striker Giampaolo Pazzini said it was a "disaster" for both goalkeepers and forwards because it is so light. Italy goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon said on his website (www.gianluigibuffon.com): "The new model is absolutely inadequate and I believe it is shameful to play such an important competition, where so many champions are taking part, with a ball like that." So far, 75% of the teams will be based in Gauteng or close by, and 60% of the group stage matches will be played within proximity of Johannesburg or Pretoria. FIFA has prohibited the naming of the hotels/resorts where the teams will be staying.Alternative retailingReinhard Barnard of Model Sport in Worcester is an innovative retailer who believes in on-the-fly retailing.
