The carnival is (nearly) overAnd finally it will be Nike (Netherlands) and adidas (Spain) battling it out as suppliers of the 2010 FIFA World Cup winner’s jersey, with Puma (Uruguay) and adidas (Germany) competing for the bronze medal on Saturday. And from next week we all have to start dealing with the withdrawal symptoms following the month-long party that made us so many new friends and made us all so proud to be South African.
Up to July 3 the ten official FIFA Fan Fests had attracted more than two million people - Durban achieving the highest attendance figure (80,087) on one day, followed by Cape Town with 41,917 and Soweto with 20,732. Internationally 371 400 people flocked to FIFA Fan Fests. Apart from the official Fan Fests, 580 000 people in Cape Town were entertained by singers, colourfully-dressed stilt walkers and other performers while they walked the Fan Walk – many fans without tickets just walking to the stadium to enjoy the fun. At the International Football Village at Birchwood in Boksburg fans were entertained by top SA bands and entertainers (including Freshly Ground); while the Emperors Palace Family Fun Park had specially dedicated kiddies’ areas with professional minders where children could have as much fun as the adults in complete safety… to name but a few of the places where locals and visitors have been mingling, making friends and enjoying our first street carnival.
