Stellenbosch opens Youth Sport InitiativeStellenbosch University opened a football Youth Sport Initiative centre aimed at developing football talent at Lentelus sports grounds in Stelenbosch. The centre forms part of the FIFA 2010 Legacy project and will provide a base for the University's Youth Sport Initiative.
Special focus programmes will be run for girls and disabled children but the centre is aimed at all youth and the entire football community. The centre will act as an after school learning facility where young people from the surrounding communities can receive a nutritional meal to ensure that they can train beneficially, educational support, life skills and football training in a safe environment. In partnership with a German social responsibility organisation, Stars of Tomorrow, the Stellenbosch University Sport Performance Institute (SUSPI) will provide children with academic and life skills training. This will pair learners who are struggling academically with specialist teachers, coaches and graduate students as they receive extra tuition, specialised life skills training and soccer instruction. The university is currently looking at collaborating with African partner universities and professional football clubs to mirror the Lentelus model in other African countries to provide a stable base for African soccer in the future.
