Ladies’ trousers are cut close to the body and, as the hip climbs higher (makes a change from the ever lowering hip line), an emphasis is placed on the waistline.

Bermuda shorts abound, with or without crease, with flap or piping pockets, with or without a turn-up.

Capri pants and pantskirts that project a care-free, natural look will be in demand to keep cool in the summer heat.

Dresses — shirtwaisters, "A" form loose dresses, baby-doll dresses — are worn over leggings and slim bottoms and have more discreet decoration than in the past.

Men’s trousers are also narrower, worn with tight long sleeved shirts with rolled up sleeves.

Preppy is the in-thing and college-inspired "V" necks is abundant on sports shirts, knit blazers and casual sport jackets.

Sporty colours

White, the colour of purity and also a symbol for the growing tendency towards spirituality, is the new black this summer. Combine it with powdery, creamy and smoky colours. Those loud, powerful colours seen in the past take a step back and are used more as accents than as basic colours.

Stripes are strong, and graphics are sketchlike, in the style of children’s drawings.
