Alexandra team beats Street legends Press ReleaseWhile the world’s eyes were on our field soccer team and facilities, grassroots SA soccer teams took on the best soccer players in the world on the streets. A street soccer team from Alexandra township, Johannesburg, recently beat The Street Legends, led by former Dutch midfielder Edgar Davids. Five years ago Davids gathered a talented group of Dutch street soccer players and took on – and beat – the best local teams in Europe, the US and Latin America … and claimed the title The Street Legends. That journey became known as The Legends Tour. This year, they included South Africa in their quest to remain kings of the asphalt in cities like Amsterdam, London, Paris, Senegal, Kenya, Ghana, Johannesburg and Cape Town. In Johannesburg they teamed up with Bafana star Teko Modise and played exhibition matches, held clinics at schools and in townships, and hosted autograph signings at stores. They played matches in Cape Town townships Crossroads, Vangate Mall and Mitchell’s Plain and also conducted clinics for kids.
